Scottish heritage runs mighty deep in our fair city of Alexandria, which after all was established by Scotsmen and which honors one of them, John Alexander, in its very name.

That heritage has been celebrated for nearly a full half-century in the Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend & Parade, which will be filling Old Town Alexandria with the sound of bagpipes and the flash of tartans on Friday, November 30th and Saturday, December 1st. The Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend & Parade

Presented by the Campagna Center and supporting that non-profit’s programs benefiting local students and families, the Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend & Parade—marking its 48th go-round this year—brings plenty of Scottish spirit (and spirits) to Alexandria.

The centerpiece of the festival is the Scottish Christmas Walk Parade itself, which steps off at 11 AM on Saturday. The rain-or-shine parade begins at St. Asaph and Wolfe streets, heads north past Duke, Prince, King, and Cameron Streets, jogs east on Queen Street, south on North Fairfax, and then proceeds a couple of blocks west on King to end at Market Square before Alexandria’s City Hall.

Bagpipers, drummers, and dancers will be among the paraders, with a wide array of Scottish Clan tartans on full display. Santa will be a part of the proceedings, as will some classic cars and local dignitaries—oh, and did we mention the Scottie dogs representing the four-legged contingent?

The parade’s finish at Market Square comes marked by a bagpipe concert there: a stirring finale, to say the least.
