The 2018 Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights: Part of a Full Day’s Worth of Christmas Merriment
The Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights (which takes place the same evening as Washington, D.C.’s own version farther up the Potomac) is a nationally renowned event: Last year, USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards honored it among the top 10 holiday parades in the country. The Holiday Boat Parade of Lights itself gets underway at 5:30 PM on Saturday, but there’s plenty of associated festivities extending the Christmas celebration. Beginning at 4 PM, a variety of family-friendly dockside activities will be offered, including DIY crafts, a Letter to Santa postcard pop-up, and a hot chocolate bar. The Torpedo Factory Art Center, meanwhile, will be opening its doors for holiday attractions from 2 to 8 PM a stone’s throw away at the Alexandria City Marina.
And all of this fun comes on the heels of another of Alexandria’s most significant holiday happenings: the Scottish Christmas Walk Parade, which steps off at St. Asaph and Wolf at 11 AM and finishes at Market Square for a bagpipe concert.
The Holiday Boat Parade of Lights Itself
At 5:30 PM, all eyes will be on the water as the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights begins: a lineup of handsome vessels magnificently dressed up for the season, their cheery lights reflecting on the Potomac’s glassy surface.
There’ll be plenty of awards for the most impressive displays, including Best Sailboat, Best Powerboat, Most Spirited Crew, Thinking Outside the Christmas Box, and Best of Show.
