Celebrate autumn in singular, family-friendly fashion on the grounds of George Washington’s famous estate with an October getaway at Morrison House, just a stone’s throw away in Old Town Alexandria!

Saturday, October 20th and Sunday, October 21st see Mount Vernon throw one of its big seasonal soirees: Fall Harvest Festival. It’s a chance to roll back the years—quite a lot of years, in point of fact—and celebrate the crisp autumn loveliness with the whole gang!

The 2018 Mount Vernon Fall Harvest Festival

As usual, old-fashioned fun and a bit of living-history-style edification will join forces for two full days of good times at Mount Vernon’s Pioneer Farm during the 2018 Fall Harvest Festival. We’re talking horse-drawn wagon rides, navigational chaos within the straw-bale maze, corn-husk doll-making, storytelling, and no-experience-necessary dancing of the sort 18th-century partygoers would be well-versed in.

Young and old will get a kick out of the Mount Vernon Fall Harvest Festival’s various demonstrations in old-school crafts such as blacksmithing/farrier work, surveying (a profession that famously employed George Washington himself), fabric-making, and various culinary arts.

More good news: The big man himself, General Washington, will be on hand for the Fall Harvest Festival proceedings, including for meet-and-greets. He’ll also help launch two reconstructed punts—small flat-bottomed boats designed for ferrying a few passengers and a modest cargo of goods in shallow waters—which were handcrafted here at Pioneer Farm this summer. The punts aid in the estate’s continuing efforts to interpret the life of one of George Washington’s slaves, Sambo Anderson, who owned a punt and may have used it to visit his family at River Farm across Little Hunting Creek.

Meanwhile, it’s not exactly a festival without live music, and helping out in that regard will be the Itinerant Band: Get ready for some colonial-era tune-age to go along with the throwback crafts, games, and dancing.

The action—yours to enjoy with admission to Mount Vernon—is underway on Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM till 5 PM.
