This annual festival celebrates the gift of approximately 3,000 cherry blossom trees from the Mayor of Tokyo to the United States in 1912. In March of that year, First Lady Helen Taft and the Japanese ambassador’s wife planted the first two saplings on the northern bank of the Tidal Basin, both of which are still standing today.
